Description
The 3 aims of electrolyte treatment is to rehydrate the calf,
provide some energy and restore the pH of the blood.
– Rehydration is achieved by mixing
electrolytes with clean, fresh water to help
replace the fluid lost with diarrhoea.
– Provision of energy is achieved by glucose (or dextrose) which also helps in the absorption of salts, which in-turn promotes water absorption and rehydration.
– Restoration of blood pH is achieved using an alkalinising agent which reverses the metabolic acidosis.
